Bramble: Learn more about managing this aggressive weed
Bramble is an aggressive weed that is a common problem throughout Sussex, Kent and Surrey. The Bramble will produce fruit in the second year of its lifecycle. In order to protect its fruit (such as blackberries) the Bramble will use thorns to discourage animals from eating them.
Due to this thorny protection, the Bramble can be a nuisance weed in both commercial and domestic landscapes. But with early action and corrective management, Bramble can be controlled or eradicated quickly and simply.
Bramble – Rubus fruticosus
- Brambles have long, thorny, arching shoots, which can grow 1.8m-2.5m
- Brambles are a frequent problem, common through-out Sussex, Kent and Surrey
- Any types of brambles bear edible fruit, and many have recurved thorns
Nettles: Learn more about managing this aggressive weed
Nettles are found in disturbed soils and on roadsides throughout Sussex, Kent and Surrey. The Nettle is a problem weed because many species of Nettle are Stinging Nettles. The hairs on the leaves of Stinging Nettles break when touched and become needle-like poison injectors. They deliver a formic acid mixture of acetylcholine, histamine, 5-HT or serotonin to the skin which causes pain and discomfort to the afflicted.
The sting is obviously painful and in some cases, last up to a week. This makes Stinging Nettles an obvious problem for commercial and domestic landscapes. The correct and effective removal method needed necessitates that it is undertaken by a trained professional with protective equipment.
Nettles – Urtica dioica
- Stinging nettle is a perennial, growing up to 2m tall in the summer and dying down to the ground in winter
- The soft green leaves are 3 to 15 cm long
- Many Nettle leaves have hairs, which break and become needles when touched
- A Stinging Nettle injects a mixture of chemicals that can cause pain for up to a week
